Chapter 303: Chapter 303 | Oedipus Simple
The silence that followed was the kind that Jordan had learned to recognize as Chloe processing information that violated several of her assumptions about how reality worked. Her eyes moved from the bunny ears to Jordan’s face to the bunny ears again, her expression cycling through surprise and confusion and something that might have been amusement or might have been concern about his mental state.
"The magic phone gave you a magical pregnancy bunny suit."
"Yes."
"And you kept it."
"I didn’t know what else to do with it. It’s not like I can donate it to Goodwill."
Chloe reached for the package with the same careful precision she’d applied to the Mystery Box, examining the material of the tights with an expression that Jordan couldn’t quite read. The fabric really was impressive, catching the light in ways that seemed almost alive, and the bunny ears looked soft enough to be comfortable while being structured enough to stay in place during whatever activities the System had intended them for.
"This is actually high quality."
"The System doesn’t do things halfway."
Chloe set the package down on the counter next to the Mystery Box, her fingers lingering on the material for a moment longer than strictly necessary. When she looked up at Jordan her expression had shifted into something more complicated, layers of emotion stacked on top of each other like geological strata.
"You realize what you’re showing me, right? You have an item that guarantees pregnancy if I wear it and we sleep together. You just told me about the System’s mechanics, including the fact that it rewards you for spending money on women. And you’re presenting this to me less than an hour after we hit maximum chemistry."
"I’m aware of how this looks."
"It looks like you’re asking me to have your baby."
Jordan’s brain stuttered to a halt for approximately half a second before he managed to restart it.
"That is absolutely not what I’m doing. I’m showing you weird System items because you asked about cool things the System does, and I figured the magical bunny suit fell under the category of things you should know about."
Chloe picked up the bunny ears again, turning them over in her hands like she was examining them for hidden mechanisms or secret compartments. The soft material caught the kitchen light and seemed to glow faintly, probably because the System couldn’t resist making everything look slightly magical.
"What would happen if I wore this without the sex part?"
"The System says it induces mild neurochemical charm enhancement and elevates physiological arousal. So probably you’d feel really good and look really attractive, but without the reproductive consequences."
"That seems like a significant loophole."
"The System’s warnings specifically mention the combination of wearing the outfit and engaging in intimate activity. I assume wearing it alone just makes you horny and pretty."
Chloe snorted at his phrasing, which Jordan counted as a win given how intense this conversation had become.
"Horny and pretty."
"I’m paraphrasing."
"You’re terrible at paraphrasing."
She set the bunny ears back down and looked at Jordan with an expression that had shifted again, this time into something more calculating. Jordan recognized that look from their business meetings, from the moments when Chloe’s brain switched from emotional processing to strategic analysis.
"So you have a magical outfit that makes the wearer aroused and attractive, with an optional pregnancy feature that only activates during sex."
"That’s the summary, yes."
"And you’re not at all thinking about how I might look wearing bunny ears and sheer tights."
Jordan opened his mouth to deny this and then closed it again, because lying about that particular point seemed both impossible and pointless. He was eighteen years old and his girlfriend was examining a magical bunny girl outfit in his kitchen. Certain thoughts were inevitable.
"I’m thinking about several things simultaneously. How you might look wearing that is definitely one of them."
Chloe’s smile was slow and knowing, the kind of expression that suggested she’d been testing him and he’d passed by being honest instead of deflecting.
"Good. I’d be worried if you weren’t."
She picked up the tights and stretched the material between her fingers, watching how it caught the light. The fabric really was impressive, somehow managing to look both delicate and durable at the same time, the kind of quality that Jordan associated with expensive lingerie stores he’d never actually entered.
"I’m not wearing this tonight."
"I wasn’t asking you to."
"But I might wear it eventually..."
Jordan’s brain required several seconds to process this statement and all of its implications.
"You want to try the magical bunny suit."
"I want to know what neurochemical charm enhancement feels like. The ears are cute and the tights look comfortable." Chloe set the items back in their packaging with the same careful precision she applied to everything. "But right now I want to open the Mystery Box, because I’ve been staring at it for five minutes and the curiosity is killing me."
Jordan grabbed the Mystery Box off the counter and set it in front of Chloe like he was presenting evidence in a trial.
"You do the honors. I opened the last one and got a trait that lets me summon plants during awkward silences. My luck with these is questionable."
"You keep bringing up the tumbleweed thing."
"Because it haunts me. I can’t stress enough how useless that trait is."
Chloe pulled the box toward her and traced the golden script along the edge one more time, that analytical furrow settling between her eyebrows like she genuinely expected to find the operating instructions hidden in the woodgrain. Then she flipped the latch.
The lid didn’t just open. It dissolved.
Golden light spilled up from inside the box, brighter than the notification glow, thick enough that Jordan actually squinted. A small object hovered in the center of the light, spinning lazily, and then the glow contracted around it and vanished, dropping a card onto the counter with a soft papery sound.
Chloe stared at it. "That’s very dramatic for a box."
"The System has no sense of restraint. It’s a whole personality."
She reached for the card before he could, which was probably fine, except then she started reading it out loud, and Jordan’s stomach did something complicated and unpleasant.
