Chapter 362: Chapter 362 - 340: If You Don’t Court Death, You Won’t Die
As a ray of sunlight hit him, Fang Chenyi was shocked to discover that he was still drifting a thousand meters in the air above the sea.
He was flying with his back to the sun. Looking up, Fang Chenyi was surprised to see that the parachute above his head had somehow turned into a giant kite.
Beneath the "giant kite," several lines hung down, tied directly to him.
"Holy crap, you’ve got to be kidding me!"
Staring at the giant kite above his head, Fang Chenyi was completely dumbfounded. ’I’m being flown like a damn kite...’
’No wonder I’ve just been floating up here.’ He sighed. ’From the looks of it, this isn’t going to stop anytime soon.’
He gritted his teeth. ’I can’t just keep floating like this.’
Especially when he looked down, Fang Chenyi couldn’t see any sign of Fang Jinjin or Qi Xiaotian.
Forget them—logically, the Ocean Harmony should have arrived by now.
It was one thing not to be able to spot a person on the vast ocean, but there was no way he could miss a cruise ship that big.
There was only one explanation: the giant kite above him had already carried him quite a long way off.
Just as Fang Chenyi had thought, the Ocean Harmony had already reached the patch of sea where he’d bailed out. What’s more, guided by the signal from Qi Xiaotian’s satellite phone, speedboats from the ship had already found the others.
Fang Jinjin and the others were in the middle of boarding the speedboats.
But back to Fang Chenyi. After scanning the area and seeing no sign of Fang Jinjin or the Ocean Harmony, he was surprised to spot the faint outline of a small island not far ahead.
The sight tempted him. ’I’m far from everyone else now. If I land in the ocean, who knows how long I’ll be stuck floating in it? That would be miserable.’
But if he landed on the island, at least he wouldn’t have to soak in the freezing seawater.
The problem was, he had no control over this giant kite. What was he supposed to do?
As the island grew closer and more distinct, Fang Chenyi grew anxious.
Suddenly, he thought of his "woven bag" space.
Inside that space, he seemed to recall, was a new parachute.
At this thought, Fang Chenyi grew excited.
With some effort, he reached inside his jacket, pulled open his snug life vest, and carefully extracted a leather pouch.
The first thing he did was loop the pouch’s strap around his wrist, only then letting out a long sigh of relief.
He’d lost his satellite phone at some point, and if his precious "woven bag" were to fall, he’d be beyond devastated.
With the pouch secured to his wrist, he cautiously unzipped a small opening, reached inside, and pulled out a large backpack.
He first secured the backpack’s straps to his body before carefully zipping the pouch shut and tucking it away safely against his chest.
Finally, he gave his life vest a thorough check to make sure the pouch wouldn’t fall out, then let out another long breath.
He reached out and, with some difficulty, got a firm grip on the parachute pack.
He looked at the lines attached to him, gathered them together, and then carefully began to strap the new parachute pack onto his back.
The action sounds simple, but it was incredibly difficult to perform, especially since he was still attached to the other parachute.
Once he had the new parachute on, Fang Chenyi let out a long sigh of relief.
He checked the distance again, only to discover to his dismay that he seemed to have miscalculated. He had been struggling for over ten minutes, but his distance from the island hadn’t changed at all.
He shook his head in resignation. He understood the old saying about how a mountain in the distance can kill a horse trying to reach it.
While he waited, Fang Chenyi reached over and pulled the paratrooper knife from its sheath on the side of the pack. Now, everything was ready; all he needed was the island.
He was currently at an altitude of over a thousand meters, which was more than high enough to open his parachute and make a safe jump.
Time ticked by. In what felt like the blink of an eye, more than an hour had passed. The sun grew scorching, and just as Fang Chenyi was about to start cursing his luck, the island finally drifted into view right in front of him.
He roughly estimated the distance. His current position was about five or six kilometers from the island. ’Don’t rush,’ he told himself. ’Wait a little longer. Jump a bit later to make sure I don’t land in the sea.’
And so, after about another ten minutes, he was finally right over the island.
From a distance, the island hadn’t seemed that large, but now that he was close, Fang Chenyi was surprised to see it was at least ten kilometers long.
Seeing the island rapidly approaching, Fang Chenyi didn’t hesitate any longer. He tightly gripped the three parachute lines still attached to his body, bunched them together, and slashed upward with his paratrooper knife.
SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!
The moment the blade touched the taut lines, the immense tension caused them to sever instantly.
Immediately after, Fang Chenyi felt his body WHOOSH as he plunged downward.
Fortunately, Fang Chenyi now had one jump under his belt. So, while he was caught slightly off guard, he didn’t panic.
His altitude wasn’t very high to begin with, so without any further hesitation, he immediately pulled the ripcord.
FWOOSH! With a pull, a snow-white parachute burst from the pack.
At the same time, Fang Chenyi once again felt that familiar lurch as his descent was arrested.
Fortunately, with no plane debris to worry about this time, the parachute deployed smoothly, and he began a gentle descent.
Since he was now right above the edge of the island, as long as nothing went wrong, he should be able to land safely in three to five minutes.
"Ahaha, am I not the luckiest guy alive or what!"
As this thought crossed his mind, he suddenly remembered something Qi Xiaotian had told him: the parachute could be steered.
Instantly, Fang Chenyi’s gaze fell on the two lines by his hands.
’Pull this one to go left, pull that one to go right... Yep, that’s it.’
Seeing he was only a hundred meters or so from the ground, his curiosity got the better of him.
He grabbed one line in each hand and started to steer.
Sure enough, as he pulled on the lines, the parachute began to sway from side to side.
However, there’s an old saying: play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
And that saying was about to apply perfectly to Fang Chenyi himself...
