Chapter 361: Chapter 361 - 339: Drifting and Drifting
The thought had only just flashed through Fang Chenyi’s mind before the rapid spinning made him dizzy and disoriented.
His woozy head could no longer think straight.
The plane debris hadn’t actually damaged the parachute too severely, only tearing a small hole in the corner. Otherwise, Fang Chenyi wouldn’t merely be spinning through the air.
With some of the parachute lines severed, Fang Chenyi lost all directional control. He had also opened his chute a bit too early, and now a considerable wind was picking up over the sea. Soon, the parachute was carrying him along like a kite with a broken string.
Flying, flying, on and on... The dizzy Fang Chenyi felt himself being tossed up and down in the air.
Meanwhile, Qi Xiaotian had already hit the water.
Even though he had shed the parachute immediately, and despite their exceptional gear, both he and Fang Jinjin still choked on seawater upon impact.
He quickly unstrapped Fang Jinjin from his chest, then grabbed the tether on her life vest and, with a CLICK, fastened it to his own.
This would prevent Fang Jinjin from being swept away from his side in the vast, dark ocean.
Buoyed by her life vest, Fang Jinjin was quite safe for the moment, though her pale face was barely visible in the darkness.
Qi Xiaotian didn’t dare to delay any longer. Time was life.
Once he was sure Fang Jinjin was in no immediate danger, he began to unstrap a large pack from his back.
He opened it as quickly as he could, reached in, and pulled the switch on the rapid inflation device. The inflatable boat in front of him immediately began to fill with air.
In about three minutes, a large, five-meter-long inflatable boat had taken shape before him.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Qi Xiaotian pulled Fang Jinjin close, had her grab a handle on the boat, and then hauled her aboard. He followed up by tossing their packs in after her.
Only when Fang Jinjin was safely on board did Qi Xiaotian let out a long sigh of relief. He then vaulted into the boat himself.
Once aboard, he didn’t dare to linger, immediately paddling toward a point of light he’d spotted while the boat was inflating.
The inflatable boat was truly top-of-the-line. Aided by a small booster motor underneath, Qi Xiaotian was able to get it gliding across the waters off the coast of Poland with just a single paddle.
They weren’t moving fast, but their progress was steady.
’At this rate,’ he thought, ’our group should be out of danger.’
"Brother Fang! Brother Fang!"
"Brother! Brother!"
Now that she was on the boat, Fang Jinjin had recovered slightly. She picked up the other paddle and began to row, calling out for Fang Chenyi all the while.
Time passed. After about twenty minutes, Qi Xiaotian and Fang Jinjin found Char struggling in the water.
After they pulled him aboard, Old Char began to mutter nonstop.
The plane explosion had given the old man a terrible fright. ’Thank goodness I listened to the boss’s orders,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, this old life of mine would be meeting its maker right about now.’
Grumbling aside, the first thing Old Char did upon boarding was take the paddle from Fang Jinjin’s hands.
With Char helping, the boat picked up speed. This time, it only took them ten-odd minutes to find Smith.
It was unclear how he’d managed it, but he was floating unconscious on the water’s surface.
His parachute, however, was gone.
As an expert skydiver, Qi Xiaotian could tell at a glance what had happened. ’The guy must have ditched his parachute right before impact.’
’But because it was so dark, he probably misjudged the altitude and was knocked unconscious by the impact with the water.’
Qi Xiaotian and Char hauled him onto the boat. Qi Xiaotian then pressed hard on the pressure point under Smith’s nose, and a moment later, the man came to.
Qi Xiaotian didn’t give him much time to recover before questioning him.
"Did Brother Fang make it off the plane?"
He asked because they had already been searching for nearly an hour with absolutely no sign of Fang Chenyi.
Moreover, his calls to Fang Chenyi’s phone went unanswered.
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH... I don’t know if the boss got off. When I jumped, he was still on the plane."
At these words, everyone’s hearts sank. That meant Fang Chenyi must have been the last one out. But they had no idea when he’d actually jumped.
Or rather, a dreadful fear took hold of them: that because Fang Chenyi had jumped so late, he had been caught in the explosion...
Instantly, Fang Jinjin burst into tears.
Seeing this, Qi Xiaotian hurriedly tried to console her.
"Don’t worry, Xiaojin. Brother Fang will be fine. He probably just got knocked out by the water when he landed, like Smith. Let’s hurry up and keep looking."
Hearing this, Fang Jinjin bit her lip to hold back her tears and nodded forcefully. Then she started shouting Fang Chenyi’s name at the top of her lungs.
But Fang Chenyi was in no position to hear their calls or see them.
To be more precise, Fang Chenyi himself had no idea where he was.
He was surrounded by endless darkness.
’I don’t get it,’ he thought. ’From two thousand meters up, I should have landed long ago.’
But right now, he couldn’t even see the surface of the sea, let alone hear the sound of the waves.
All he could see was endless darkness; all he could hear was the WHOSHING of the wind.
Drifting, drifting, on and on.
Fang Chenyi’s body had stopped spinning, but this endless drifting was starting to make him frantic.
But no matter how frantic he felt, his body kept on drifting.
The minutes ticked by. His initial anxiety and agitation had passed, and now Fang Chenyi had calmed down. Buffeted by the WHOSHING wind, he was actually starting to feel bored.
"Damn it all! Whatever’s going to happen, just get it over with. What’s the point of just floating here like this?"
SIGH...
Suspended in mid-air, Fang Chenyi fought against the wind to raise his wrist again, sighing heavily to himself. ’It’s already three in the morning. A full two hours have passed since I jumped.’
’I wonder how my sister and the others are doing. I hope they weren’t hit by any of the debris.’
Another hour passed. Fang Chenyi was still drifting in the sky. Not only that, but the sky was now beginning to show the pale light of dawn.
