Chapter 2089: Chapter 2089 - 2089: The Tempest Unbound
The floor after the valley of giants was a world of sound and confusion. The portal dumped them into the center of a massive, circular arena. The walls were smooth black stone that seemed to suck in the light. But the floor was pure white sand. And the air was filled with a constant, high-pitched buzzing.
The enemy this time was a swarm. Not of small things, but of creatures called Wind Slicers. They looked like giant, floating stingrays made of shadow and sharp crystal. They had no eyes, but they could feel the movement of air. They hunted by slicing through the wind with their razor-sharp wing edges. There were hundreds of them, swirling around the arena in a chaotic, deafening cloud. They moved in a blur, and the sound of their wings was like a million angry hornets.
Alex took one look at the swirling storm of shadow and crystal and then looked at Saeko. He saw the fire in her eyes. This was her battlefield. These creatures lived in the air. They were the wind, in a twisted, deadly way. And she was its master.
He leaned back against the black wall of the arena, crossing his arms. He let his sword vanish. "This one's yours," he said, his voice calm and certain. "Show me what you can do."
Saeko didn't need to be told twice. A fierce, focused smile touched her lips. This was the test. Not just to survive, but to conquer. To prove that the wind was hers.
She stepped forward onto the white sand. She didn't just draw her katana. She pulled it from its sheath in one smooth, slow motion that was full of purpose. The shing of the steel was a clear, clean note that cut right through the swarm's awful buzzing.
Immediately, the nearest Wind Slicers reacted. They felt the disturbance in the air. Three of them detached from the swarm and dove at her, their shadowy bodies leaving trails of darkness, their crystal edges humming.
Saeko didn't move. She just stood there, her katana held loosely at her side. She closed her eyes for a second and took a deep breath.
The wind in the arena answered.
It wasn't a wild gale. It was a sudden, perfect calm that surrounded just her. The buzzing seemed to get quieter. The three diving Slicers hit the edge of this calm and faltered, like they had flown into a wall of clear jelly.
That's when Saeko moved.
She opened her eyes, and they were glowing with a soft, emerald light. She flicked her wrist. It was a tiny movement.
But the wind screamed.
A blade of compressed air, invisible but deadly sharp, shot from the tip of her katana. It sliced through the first Wind Slicer, cutting it clean in two. The two shadowy halves dissolved into black smoke before they hit the sand.
The other two Slicers tried to pull up. Saeko took a single, graceful step forward. She swung her katana in a horizontal arc. No sword touched the creatures. Instead, a crescent of howling wind, ten feet wide, erupted from her swing. It swept the two Slicers up, shredded their crystal wings, and smashed them against the black wall with a sound like breaking glass.
The rest of the swarm went crazy. The buzzing became a shriek of pure rage. Dozens of them broke from the main cloud and shot toward her like a hail of dark arrows.
Alex watched from the wall, his face a mask of calm observation. He didn't interfere. He just watched her work.
Saeko began to dance.
She didn't run from the swarm; she ran into it. The wind wasn't just around her now—it was her. It lifted her. It moved her. With every step, a gust would launch her into the air. With every spin, a cyclone would form around her, deflecting a dozen slicing attacks. She would land, spin on one foot, and send out another invisible blade of air that would cut down three more creatures.
Her katana was a conductor's baton, directing a symphony of destruction. She wasn't just fighting the Wind Slicers; she was stealing their element and using it against them. She would suck the air out from under one, making it drop and shatter on the sand. She would create a tiny, focused tornado that would grab a group of five Slicers and grind them together until they were dust.
She was a green-and-silver storm in the middle of the black swarm. For a full five minutes, Alex just watched. He saw her use techniques he had taught her, but she had made them her own. He saw her try new things—a spiraling drill of wind, a net of slicing air currents. She was experimenting. She was playing. And she was absolutely unstoppable.
The swarm, realizing it was being slaughtered, tried one last, desperate move. The remaining hundred or so creatures gathered high above the arena. They formed into a single, massive spear of shadow and crystal, pointed straight down at Saeko. They gathered all their power and dove as one, a single, colossal strike meant to erase her from existence.
Saeko looked up at the death falling from the sky. She didn't look scared. She looked determined. She planted her feet in the white sand and raised her katana high above her head with both hands. She closed her eyes, gathering every bit of her focus, every ounce of her will.
The wind in the entire arena stopped.
For one second, there was perfect, terrifying silence.
Then, she brought her katana down.
"TEMPEST FANG!" she shouted.
From her blade, a single, monstrous claw of solidified wind and raw power shot upward. It was shaped like the head of a dragon, all roaring fury and razor-sharp teeth made of howling gales. It met the diving spear of Slicers head-on.
There was no explosion. There was a sound of a world tearing apart.
It was so devastating so beautiful.
