Chapter 300: Chapter 300 | One Hundred Percent

Not the gentle kiss from earlier, the one that thanked him for surviving her family. This kiss had weight behind it, intention, the accumulated pressure of weeks of suspicious glances and mental files and questions she hadn’t been able to ask. Her fingers curled into the fabric of his henley, pulling him down to meet her halfway, and Jordan’s hands found her waist without conscious direction, sliding around to the small of her back where her sweater had ridden up just enough to expose a strip of warm skin.

"Mmnh..."

The sound escaped from somewhere deep in Chloe’s throat, soft and surprised and doing absolutely devastating things to Jordan’s ability to think. Her lips parted against his, the kiss deepening from urgent to something slower, more deliberate, like she was trying to memorize the shape of him.

Jordan’s back hit the kitchen counter and he hadn’t even realized they were moving. Chloe pressed into him, her body a warm weight against his chest, her fingers climbing from his shirt to the back of his neck where they tangled in his hair and tugged. The slight sting of it sent sparks cascading down his spine.

"Ah—"

His own voice, embarrassingly breathy, breaking the kiss just long enough for Chloe to pull back and look at him with eyes gone dark and hazy.

"You told me everything," she said, and her voice had dropped into that lower register that usually meant she was either angry or turned on. Given the current circumstances, Jordan was betting on the latter.

"Everything important."

"The System, the gacha, the quests, the other women."

"All of it."

"Because you didn’t want to lose me."

"Because I couldn’t lie to you anymore."

Chloe’s hands slid down from his neck to his chest, her palms flat against him, feeling the rapid hammer of his heartbeat through his ribs.

"The System wants you to have multiple women."

"The System wants a lot of things."

"What do you want?"

The question landed like a punch, direct and impossible to dodge. Jordan could feel the weight of it settling between them, the moment where everything pivoted and the next words out of his mouth would determine the shape of whatever came after.

"I want you," he said, because complicated answers were for people who had time to think. "I want Kumiko, because she’s become important to me in ways I didn’t expect. I want to build something real with both of you and whoever else comes along, something that works for everyone instead of just for the guy holding the magic phone. I want to stop feeling like I’m playing a game and start feeling like I’m living a life."

Chloe’s breath came out shaky.

"That’s a lot of wanting."

"I’m a greedy person. The System didn’t make me that way, it just made it profitable."

Her laugh was soft, almost inaudible, but Jordan felt it vibrate through her chest where she was pressed against him.

"I should be mad at you."

"Probably."

"You’ve been tracking our relationship like a spreadsheet for weeks."

"The System handles the tracking. I just read the reports."

"That’s worse."

"I know."

Chloe pulled back just far enough to look at him properly, her eyes searching his face for something Jordan hoped she’d find.

"I have my own secrets," she said. "Big ones. Things I haven’t told you."

"I know."

Her eyebrows rose.

"I don’t know the specifics, but I know they exist. You’re too careful, too controlled, too perfect at maintaining your image for someone who doesn’t have something worth hiding." Jordan’s hand came up to cup her face, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone. "When you’re ready to tell me, I’ll listen. Until then, I can wait."

"What if it’s bad?"

"Define bad."

"What if it changes how you see me?"

"Nothing’s going to change how I see you, Chloe. You’re the girl who built an empire while pretending to be normal. You’re the girl who sends money to her brother’s college fund without taking credit. You’re the girl who sat through two hours of her mother criticizing my vegetable cuts because she wanted me to be part of her real life." Jordan’s voice softened. "Whatever secret you’re keeping, it’s not going to be bigger than any of that."

Chloe’s eyes glistened, though no tears fell.

"You’re too good at this."

"At what?"

"Saying exactly the right thing."

"The System helps with that part."

"I hate you."

"Your chemistry percentage suggests otherwise."

She kissed him again, harder this time, her teeth catching his lower lip in a way that made Jordan’s brain go temporarily offline. His hands tightened on her waist, pulling her closer, erasing the distance between them until there was nothing left but heat and pressure and the soft sounds she made against his mouth.

"Nnh... Jordan..."

His name in her voice, breathless and wanting, might have been the best thing he’d ever heard. Better than the System notifications, better than the gacha rewards, better than any of the victories he’d accumulated over the past three weeks of transformation.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing hard, Chloe’s cheeks were flushed and her lips were swollen and her hair had come partially loose from its styling. She looked wrecked in the best possible way, and Jordan couldn’t stop staring.

"Your phone is glowing."

Jordan blinked.

"What?"

"It’s glowing gold."

He looked down and saw that she was right. The familiar golden light of the System was brighter than he’d ever seen it, pulsing with an intensity that suggested something significant had just happened.

The screen was alive with notifications, cascading down in a waterfall of golden text that seemed to go on forever. But one notification sat at the top, larger than the others, impossible to miss.
