Chapter 713: Chapter 713. Right Now... There Is Only One Law On This Rock (Me)
He felt the resistance, the stubborn, fluttering heartbeats of Valentina and Morwenna, and it only made him more sadistic.
"Fuck the Underlayer’s ’new governance’!" he spat, the words dripping with contempt. "Fuck their rules, fuck their structure, and fuck their ’order’!"
"They want a system? They want a hierarchy? Fine! But right now, there is only one law on this godforsaken rock, and that law is ME!"
He clenched his fist, and miles away, a golem crushed a man’s skull into a wet, red pulp. Rex felt the satisfaction of it in his very bones.
"You want to be heroes, Ren?!"
"You want to be martyrs, Valentina?" Rex’s voice dropped to a low, terrifying snarl that carried the weight of a death sentence. "Then die like them!"
"I’m not here to rule a kingdom of subjects; I’m here to build a monument out of your fucking corpses!"
"I will grind your bones into the very dust these golems walk on!"
"And I will FUCKING tear the screams from your throats and use them as music for my ascension!"
He watched the data streams, the lives flickering like candles in a storm. He didn’t care about the long-term stability of the island.
He didn’t care about the "assets" or the "people." He wanted the visceral, immediate thrill of total domination.
"I don’t need an empire of willing servants!" he screamed at the heavens, his eyes wide and manic. "I want a graveyard of broken spirits!"
"I’ll rip the magic from your veins and the life from your eyes!"
"Every single one of you... every last fucking one... will taste the dirt before you taste peace!"
"You’ll beg for the mercy of a quick death, but all you’ll get is the slow, agonizing weight of the world crushing the life out of your miserable, defiant souls!"
He leaned forward, his spirit practically lashing out through the earthen authority.
"Come on then!" he challenged, a crazed, beautiful grin splitting his face. "Show me that ’authority’! Show me that ’will’!"
"Let’s see how much of your fucking soul is left once the earth has swallowed you whole!"
The golem erupted from the earth like a vengeful mountain, the sheer force of its emergence catching Ren Askar mid-stride. The hero was tossed upward, a ragdoll caught in a geyser of jagged basalt, before slamming back down onto a rising slab of stone.
The impact was sickening, the sound of Ren’s breath leaving his lungs in a violent, wet wheeze as his ribs groaned under the pressure.
Before Ren could even scramble to his feet, the golem’s voice, not a human voice but a tectonic rumble that felt like grinding boulders, vibrated through the air, channeled directly by Rex’s sadistic will.
"You had your moment, Ren Askar!" the golem roared, the sound echoing with Rex’s arrogant, mocking lilt. "I gave you the chance to kneel!"
"I gave you the chance to be part of something greater than your pathetic, mortal struggles!"
"But you just had to play the hero, didn’t you? You had to throw it all away for a fucking feeling!"
Ren spat a mouthful of thick, metallic blood onto the grey stone, his eyes burning with a defiant, desperate fire. He gripped his weapon, his knuckles white, his body trembling from the shock of the impact.
"A chance?" Ren croaked, his voice rasping through the pain. "You didn’t offer a chance, Tremor!"
"You offered a leash! And you call this a gift?!"
"It’s just a slow way to die in a cage of your own making! If this is your ’greatness,’ then fuck your godhood!"
"I’d rather die a man than live as your fucking pet!"
"Then die!" Rex’s voice screamed through the stone. "Die like the dog you are!"
The golem didn’t just strike; it lunged with a speed that defied its massive weight. A colossal fist, a slab of granite the size of a carriage, swung in a devastating arc.
Ren dove to the side, the wind from the blow nearly knocking him over, but the golem wasn’t finished. A jagged shard of stone, torn from the golem’s own forearm, whipped out like a spear.
It caught Ren in the shoulder. The sound was a horrific crunch and schlick as the stone tore through muscle and clavicle, pinning him momentarily to the ground.
Ren let out a guttural, soul-tearing scream, the crimson spray of his blood painting the golem’s grey skin in a grotesque, beautiful pattern.
"Is that... all... you’ve got?" Ren hissed, his face contorted in agony.
He drove his blade into the soft, earthen joint of the golem’s limb, the metal shrieking as it bit into the magically hardened stone.
The golem responded with pure, unadulterated brutality. It didn’t use technique; it used mass, and it brought its heavy, blunt knee down onto Ren’s midsection.
There was a sickening, muffled thud, the unmistakable sound of internal organs being compressed and bones splintering. Ren’s eyes bulged, his mouth opening in a silent scream as he coughed up a spray of dark, clotted blood.
Ren scrambled back, his movements sluggish and desperate, leaving a smear of red on the ground. He swung his weapon in a desperate wide arc, a burst of hero system energy flaring around the blade.
The strike was true, shearing off a chunk of the golem’s shoulder, sending a spray of pulverized rock and magical essence flying. But Rex was enjoying this too much to let him finish.
"Pathetic!" the golem bellowed.
It reached down with a hand that felt like a falling cliff, its massive fingers closing around Ren’s waist.
The pressure was immense. Ren could feel his hips grinding together, the sensation of his pelvis beginning to fracture under the sheer geological force.
He hammered his fists against the golem’s arm, his knuckles splitting and bleeding, but it was like striking a mountain.
With a violent, sadistic heave, the golem lifted Ren high into the air and slammed him face-first into a rising pillar of stone. The impact was catastrophic.
Ren’s nose shattered, and a spray of blood and sinus fluid erupted from his face. He slumped, his vision blurring, the world spinning in a haze of pain and red.
The golem loomed over him, its shadow swallowing the broken hero whole. It raised its massive, heavy foot, the stone toes scraping against the ground with a sound like a thousand knives on a plate.
"Look at you," Rex’s voice whispered through the vibration, dripping with a terrifying, intimate cruelty. "Broken. Bleeding. Alone!"
"This is the end of your hero’s journey, Ren. Just a smear of meat on the bottom of my world."
The golem didn’t bring its foot down to end it. Rex wasn’t finished. He wanted to savor the sensation of a hero being unmade, piece by agonizing piece.
He wanted to feel the exact moment the light of defiance turned into the dull, hollow stare of the dying.
The massive stone foot descended, but instead of a crushing blow, it landed with a heavy, sickening thump just beside Ren’s head, pinning his left arm to the earth.
CRUNCH!
Ren’s scream was a high, jagged thing that tore through the air, a sound of pure, unadulterated neurological shock. The weight of the golem had pulverized the radius and ulna in his forearm, turning the bone into a jagged mess of splinters hidden beneath a swelling mass of purpled flesh and torn skin.
"Did you hear that, Ren?" Rex’s voice vibrated through the ground, a dark, melodic purr of sadistic pleasure. "That was the sound of your potential snapping!"
"It’s a beautiful sound, isn’t it? Like dry wood in a fire."
The golem’s other hand, a massive claw of jagged basalt, reached down and gripped Ren’s right leg. With agonizing slowness, the golem began to pull.
RRRRIIIIIPPPPP...
The sound of stretching tendons and tearing fascia was audible even over Ren’s frantic, sobbing gasps. Ren’s back arched off the stone, his fingers clawing uselessly at the dirt, his fingernails tearing off as he tried to find purchase.
"STOP! PLEASE!" Ren shrieked, a desperate, broken plea that lacked any of his former dignity. "AAGGGHHHH! JUST... KILL ME! FUCKING KILL ME!"
"Kill you?" The golem’s voice boomed, a tectonic laugh that sent tremors through Ren’s very marrow. "And end the fun so soon?"
"You haven’t even felt the best part yet!"
With a sudden, violent SNAP, the golem jerked the leg upward. The hip joint groaned, the socket popping with a sound like a gunshot as the femur was partially wrenched from its housing. Ren’s scream hit a frequency that felt like it would shatter glass, a long, unending wail of agony that ended in a wet, choking gargle as he vomited a spray of bile and thick, dark blood.
POP CRACK!
Rex was leaning into the sensation, his own breath coming in ragged, ecstatic gasps. He could feel the heat of Ren’s blood through the stone, the frantic, stuttering rhythm of the man’s heart.
"You... monster..." Ren wheezed, his face a mask of gore, one eye swollen shut, the other staring blankly at the sky. "You’re... nothing... but... a... goddamn... butcher..."
"Exactly!" Rex roared through the golem. "And a butcher knows how to prepare the meat!"
The golem’s hand moved to Ren’s chest. It didn’t crush; it pressed. Slowly. Methodically.
The sound of the sternum beginning to bow under the weight was a slow, rhythmic creak... creak... creak...
CRUNCH SPLIT!
The chest cavity gave way. The sound was visceral: the wet, heavy thud of a lung collapsing and the sharp, splintering crack of the ribcage shattering inward.
Ren’s body convulsed violently, his legs kicking in a useless, rhythmic spasm of death throes. Blood began to bubble from his mouth in thick, frothy clumps, spilling over his chin and staining his chest a deep, glistening crimson.
"Look at the color, Ren!" Rex screamed, his voice bordering on manic. "That’s the color of your reality!"
"That’s the only truth left on this island! Red! Wet! And fucking dying!"
