Chapter 343: Chapter 343 - 341:All in a day’s work.
"Ummm.... Outsider. Are you sure these readings are correct?" The abyss walker asked as he studied the testing device before him.
We were currently within an expansive space meant for testing the eligibility of anybody willing to become a wanderer.
Apparently, becoming a wanderer wasn’t anything too difficult. One just needed to register their name. Take a reading of their rank. And then they’ll be assigned their first tests to determine if they’re qualified for the lowest Riftstrider rank.
As of now, I was the only one here since I had come quite early on and the guild was just opening up.
Yea. I had no idea how time moved here.
But, that wasn’t the issue at hand.
"Yes. My good man. What you’re reading is correct." I replied to the bothered abyss walker.
We had just done a test of my rank and the bold B-rank being displayed was clearly causing some major issues with the registerer.
"Dear guest. I don’t think you understand what it is you’re registering for. With a Mortal stage rank, you wish to become a wanderer? Where are your retainers. You should go find them and end this foolishness." The horned abyss walker shook his head.
"Oyy! What’s all this nonsense about? What’s my rank got to do with you? Since when did it matter what rank I was if I wanted to register."
The abyss walker’s eyes slowly lost their cordiality.
"Outsider. You have to understand. The least of the infernals within the abyss are threats comparable to powerhouses at the Late-stage of transformation. Having you registered when you’re merely a mortal rank warrior is the height of folly."
"If I’m not wrong, this should be your first time within the abyss. Have you even encountered an infernal before?"
He didn’t bother hiding or disguising the scorn in his gaze.
I probably looked like the spoiled young master of some notable family that had ventured into the abyss to train.
I already looked the part anyway. So why not act the part?
"Humph! Merely mindless creatures. This young master doesn’t need to encounter them to know they will not be a match for me. I am after all, the most renowned genius within my family. Abyss Walker. Know your place." I sneered as I looked down on him.
His eyes turned cold the moment I used the words "Abyss walker" but unlike the others, he didn’t lash out.
"Hoooo.... The guild has strict rules about how we do things. We do not wish for some outsider to come and cause us troubles due to the rash decisions of clearly delusional fools."
"YOU DAREEEEE!!!!!!" I flared in fake young master outrage.
My own acting impressed me quite well.
"Quell your rage outsider." The abyss Walker released his aura subtly.
Peak law comprehension. I could feel the flame particles in the air shift and bend to his whims as the place got a bit hotter.
But. Which young master ever took kindly to such words? I mean, if I’m going go to act it out. I might as well commit to it fully.
"You dare threaten me? You filthy abyss walker? Do you know that with a word, I can have my father enter the abyss and raze this shabby guild of yours to the ground?"
I had no idea what I was talking about at this point.
The guild had supposedly been founded by one of the most terrifying existences in the Abyss. So naturally... I was talking complete bullshit.
"Heh! You amuse me, little outsider. Forget your family whoever they are. Even your entire world. The star sector you spawn from. If they all joined together to raid the abyss. They wouldn’t be able to cause the slightest bit of damage to my wanderer guild. Know your place." His eyes glinted in cold murderous fury.
Seems I’d finally struck a chord.
"Good.."
"Now. Make your move." A dangerous smile spread across my face.
Just when the tension seemed ready to snap.
"Corvak. What seems to be the issue?"
A calm voice interrupted us.
"Warden Seroth." The horned abyss walker before me hastily abandoned his killing intent as he bowed in the direction behind me.
Curious, I turned.
Approaching us was a man with ash-grey skin. Silver white hair that reached his lower back. A sword was strapped elegantly to his back as he took calm measured steps toward us.
"At ease, corvak." The abyss walker smiled as he addressed the bowing man.
"So. Care to answer me now?" He asked once more as he didn’t bother to acknowledge my existence.
"Warden Seroth. My apologies for showing you such a display." The man apologized.
"There’s no need for such formality between us corvak. I had just arrived after completing my last trip. And the people at the front had said you were registering a new wanderer. So I thought I’d come take a look. But it seems there are some complications?" The grey skinned man finally turned his attention on me.
"Is this outsider causing you problems? Should I dispose of him?" The spike in killing intent made my already dangerous smile widen.
"I wouldn’t bother you with such a task Warden Seroth. After all, the rules of the guild prohibit such actions." The man shook his head.
"I see." The grey skinned man kept his stare leveled as he finally asked for the third time.
"So. What seems to be the issue? Enough for you to be this agitated."
I crossed my arms in amusement as I acted completely oblivious to the conversation about to ensue.
"Haaa..." the horned abyss walker let out a long breath.
"I was merely letting this outsider understand that his rank is insufficient to protect his life outside. And I cannot have such a stain on my record within the guild." He answered.
"Hmm? His rank? What rank could he possibly be in for you to refuse so vehemently?"
"Mortal B-rank.." the horned man sighed.
....
....
"Pfft.... Hahahahahahahahahhaha...." The grey skinned abyss walker burst into sudden laughter the moment the words register.
"Forgive... forgive me corvak. But did you just say a B-rank mortal whelp dares register as a wanderer?" Th man asked between fits of laughter.
"Now you understand my dilemma, warden." The horned man answered helplessly.
"Worry not my good man. Allow me to help you with this little inconvenience."
"Hmmm?" I raised a curious brow at those words.
"You there. Outsider." The grey skinned man approached me.
"You wish to become a wandere with that measly strength of yours?"
"I do. What’s that got to do with your ugly ass?"
Man. I was really loving this douchebag young master act.
The man’s face twisted in rage after hearing my retort
"Count yourself lucky then. I’ll give you a chance to prove you deserve to become a wanderer."
"Oh? Is that so? I wonder how?" Amusement flickered on my face as I waited for the fool to take the bait.
"Tell you what? Survive an attack of mine and you would have proven your capabilities." He offered in mock generosity.
"Why would I do any of that? You don’t have the right to prevent me from becoming a wanderer anyhow, so bug off."
"You dare..."
"Yes! Yes I do. Now make it worth my while or fuck off."
The killing intent in the man’s eyes suddenly intensified.
"Alright. You audacious mortal. I’ll humor your delusion."
He pulled out a rough looking map.
"This is a map of the general area surrounding sand city. It has the marked locations of the most sort after infernals. It’s something I was gifted by the city lord after becoming an abyss warden. It should do perfectly for a newly registered wanderer. Of course that is considering you survive my attack."
Now. That was something worth having.
"Alright you ugly fuck. You’re on." The man’s grin widened.
"But!" My words shut him down.
"But what? Outsider! Do not push me!"
"Don’t get your pants in a tangle, you ambiguous looking fuck. All I wanted to say was. If I’m supposed to take an attack from you, then you should do the same from me right?" I asked, tone playful.
"You wish to attack me? You. A feeble mortal rank child? Against an Abyss warden? Hahahahahahahaha..."
"Just answer the damn question, you grey skinned salamander."
He choked on his laughter as his killing intent flooded the room.
"You’re going to die a slow and painful death, outsider."
"I’ll take that as a yes then." My smile became impossible to suppress as we made our way toward an arena like setting.
....
....
"Outsider. You can still back out. I’ll speak to the warden. He’ll listen." He horned abyss Walker seemed to not be such a bad guy afterall, as he tried to dissuade me from my actions.
"Hahahahaha... old man. Worry not. Only one person walks out of here today. And I assure you, it’ll be me. Just stay back and watch." I laughed away his worries.
"Foolish outsider. Are you ready to die?" The grey skinned man drew his sword as he stood opposite me.
"Let’s get this over with. I need to start adventuring as soon as possible. Now, make your move." I hooked my finger in the man’s direction, making a "come on" gesture.
"Audacious outsider!!! DIEEEEE!!!" The aura of a law integration expert burst out of him as he appeared before me, sword swinging for my neck.
CLANGGGGG!!!!!!
The sound of metal clashing against metal reverberated through the entire room as the man recoiled violently from the strike, his sword shattering into pieces that fell to the floor.
A heavy silence gripped the room as the horned abyss walker stood mouth agape.
The grey skinned abyss Walker was still busy trying to stop his trembling arms.
"Ho..." he barely had time to get the words out before I appeared right in front of him.
"I guess it’s my turn now."
BANG!
I slapped out.
The air detonated as the grey skinned man... exploded into blood mist.
"Oh no you don’t.." I slapped out once more.
The head that had detached itself in an attempt to escape being blasted to bloody mist as well.
"And that’s how you take care of garbage." I clapped my hands. Getting rid of the imaginary dust on them.
Approaching the still stunned horned abyss walker, I pried the map from his frozen body.
Collected the premade wanderer license I had forced them create before engaging in the duel and then, walked out whistling.
"Heh. All in a day’s work." I laughed.
The map?
Check.
Wanderer licence?
Check.
No actual destination?
Just the way I liked it.
"Now this..."
A grin spread across my face.
"...is an adventure."
