He descended to gene-active depth at Zone Six’s conduit site one hour after sunrise.

The conduit was new — less than a day old. The energy channel was still settling into its shape, the carrier function reading a freshness in the stone that older conduits did not have. Zone One’s conduit felt like a road. Zone Six’s conduit felt like a road built yesterday, still taking on the character of the terrain around it.

He held position at thirty-two meters — below the entity’s territory, below the organized ridge stone, in the layer where the carrier function could reach the archive network.

The archive connection registered immediately.

The system’s archive interface had been steady since Zone Three — when Kai had absorbed Fragment #3 at that site, the remote access method had become part of his working grammar. He did not need to go to the archive gorge. The conduit network carried the archive’s signal through every anchored site. Six conduit sites now. Six points of access.

He read the archive.

Fragment #4 was present. It had been available since the full archive unsealing in Ch. 290 — waiting, the way the first three had waited, for the integration protocol to begin. He identified its position in the archive’s catalog and held the carrier function steady.

The gene material’s surface signal was distinct from the first three.

Fragment #1 — the Primordial Stone Gene — had felt like compressed time. Old rock with the weight of geological ages pressed into it. Fragment #2 had been flow, the movement of fault energy over deep time. Fragment #3 had been organizational, the distributed entity’s pattern held in gene form. Fragment #4 felt like something different. The carrier function read a material that was more alive than geological. Not organism-level alive — something between stone and biology, the way soil is between rock and plant.

He recognized what he was reading.

Ridge node. The archive node nearest to the surface. The gene material here had been accumulating genetic influence from surface life for longer than the archive had been sealed. Ten thousand years of root contact, rain passage, seasonal temperature cycles — all of it recorded in the gene material at the closest point.

He sent the integration request.

It was a network — fine and branching, the way root systems branch, the way capillary stone fractures branch. The carrier function could not read it from one point. It had to follow each branch individually, mapping the full architecture before integration could begin.

He spent forty minutes reading.

The material’s quality changed the further he mapped it. At the center it was stone — ancient, slow, geological. At the edges it was something lighter. The gene material at Fragment #4’s outer boundary had been influenced by whatever lived above Zone Six’s ridge node for ten millennia. He could read the traces. Not specific organisms — compressed time. The accumulated signature of surface life cycling above one point on the earth for longer than any individual generation could hold.

Stage 1 completed. The system acknowledged.

Stage 2 was the attachment phase.

This was where Elite and King grade genes were immediate — the gene material was biological, it recognized living tissue, the attachment was a natural fit. Mythic grade genes required the carrier function to build the attachment point rather than find it. The material was old enough, strange enough, that the carrier function had to prepare its own architecture to hold what it was absorbing.

Stage 2 took sixty-eight minutes. The pool cost moved steadily. He tracked it from the corner of his attention and let the integration process run.

Mira had not left the conduit site.

She was seated three meters from where Kai had descended, the vault pair in her hands, both shells forward. She had been still for nearly two hours. Soren had set his instruments at the zone boundary and gone quiet. Yara had her ecology notebooks open but had not written anything in the last hour.

When Stage 2 completed and Kai’s carrier function shifted into Stage 3, the vault pair’s pale shell brightened.

Mira did not speak. She did not need to — the change in the shell was visible. She noted the time and wrote three words in her translation log.

Soren glanced at her.

"The archive is responding to Stage 3?"

"Something is." She held the pale shell carefully, reading the ridge marks. "The archive isn’t broadcasting — it’s receiving. Kai is pushing through, and the archive is registering each step."

Soren made a note.

"Can you tell what’s happening in Stage 3?"

"Not precisely." She was quiet for a moment. "The signal quality is different from Fragments One through Three. Lighter. The previous absorptions felt like stone registering stone. This one feels like stone registering something that learned to touch the surface."

Soren looked at his instruments. The gene signal in the soil — which had been elevated since the conducting event — was showing a second distinct reading beneath the conduit-related baseline. Smaller than the conducting event. Steady.

He wrote this down and said nothing further.

Stage 3 completed at two hours and fifty-four minutes.

Kai surfaced. Pool at thirty-one percent.

He sat at the ridge edge and waited for his vision to settle. Stage 3 of a Mythic absorption always took a few minutes to fully land — the gene material had integrated, but the body needed time to register what was new.

The new was immediate.

He did not need to activate anything. The passive function engaged before he had fully surfaced. Pattern Hold — which he had carried since Fragment #3 — read organized energy architectures. It was always running at low level, a background awareness of the conduit network’s shape. This was different from Pattern Hold.

This was wider.

He could feel all six zones.

Not their depth, not their geological character — their surface. The gene energy reaching the soil layer from each conduit site, the rate at which each zone was drawing from the network, the density of the surface influence each zone was generating. Zone One was steady, moderate, the oldest and most settled of the six. Zone Three was stronger than its anchor count suggested — its entity had been active longer than its construction time. Zone Five was the highest surface concentration, the vertical column delivery that Soren had measured in the hundreds of meters.

And Zone Six was different from all of them. Lighter. More alive than geological. The ridge node’s surface biological influence read distinctly from the others — not louder, just different in quality.

The notification arrived.

Three of four requirements met. Only the EP gap remained between him and Gene Primordial. At the rate zones were contributing — Zone 4 had given 380, Zone 5 had given 310, Zone 6 had given 280 — the remaining 1,140 points would require Zones 7, 8, and 9 at minimum, plus accumulation from other sources.

Not fast. Not impossible.

He wrote in the survey book: Fragment #4 absorbed — Ridge Light Gene. 2 hrs 54 min. 3-stage. Pool cost: 69% (31% remaining). Skills: Ambient Map (passive — active immediately), Broad Send (active, 14%). EP: 860. Primordial: 3 of 4 requirements met. EP gap: 1,140.

He held the pen over the paper for a moment.

The passive is different. Not reading the stone. Reading the surface of six zones simultaneously without trying.

He closed the book.

Mira came to sit beside him at the zone boundary. The vault pair was back in the carry bag — the archive was quiet again, the pale shell had returned to its ordinary low glow.

"The conducting event this morning," she said. "What you saw in the grass."

"Yes."

"The Zone Six entity was showing you that." She looked at the ridge grass. "The root system rising. It has been watching the network for months and it wanted you to see how it has been connected to this place all along." She paused. "It wasn’t demonstrating the conducting. It was showing you what twelve meters looks like from the inside."

Kai looked at the ridge grass.

The surface effects from yesterday’s conducting were still faintly present — the roots slightly denser, the grass moving with a quality that was different from the zones that received their gene energy from depth. Zone Six’s gene energy did not arrive from above or rise from below. It was in the ground. It had always been in the ground.

Through Ambient Map, he felt all six zones. Zone One, steady and established. Zone Two, patient and repaired. Zone Three, alert in the way it had always been alert. Zone Four, spreading slowly through mudflat stone. Zone Five, its vertical column still dispersing outward from yesterday’s work. Zone Six, close, warm, the same quality as its signal — already present.

"The entity at Zone Seven," Kai said. "It has been listening to all of this?"

"All the developing zones have." She was quiet a moment. "Zone Seven has been listening to all six zones conducting for months. It knows the carrier function’s rhythm. It knows the zone network’s shape." She looked at him. "They are not isolated anymore. None of them."

He noted this.

The Broad Send skill would let him communicate with Zone Seven’s entity before he arrived. Not necessary — the entity had been monitoring the network and would recognize his carrier frequency the moment he crossed the zone boundary. But the option existed. Filed.

He looked northeast toward the river valley. Two days of travel. A new stone grammar. The anchor estimate — forty-four to fifty-six — was the highest of the medium zones. Zone Seven was the first one where the entity had actively chosen its territory, slope-stone over valley floor. It had prepared itself in its own way.

He wrote one final entry: Zone 7 — departure tomorrow. Anchor estimate 44–56. Slope-stone grammar. Entity has been monitoring the full network for months. Approach accordingly.

He looked at the ridge one more time.

Six zones chained. Three archive fragments absorbed. Eighty-six percent of the Gene Primordial gap still to close.

The work was clear. None of it was close.

He put the book away and watched the evening light move across the ridge grass, the gene energy in the roots invisible to anything that wasn’t paying close attention.

He was paying close attention.
