Chapter 324: Gene Ancient VIII

Zone Five came together faster than the estimate.

On Day Twenty-Three, Kai set twelve anchors in the morning session alone. The entity at Zone Five had been waiting at the anchor front since the previous evening. Not the patient extension Zone Four had needed, slowly moving into newly covered ground. Zone Five met the carrier function at the point of contact, matched character for character, and held.

He surfaced at midday with six anchors remaining.

Cole was at the camp.

He was standing at the table with Soren — not sitting, not hovering. Standing at what Kai would have called a professional distance. Mira was at the zone boundary with the vault pair, her back to the camp.

"You have time remaining in my offer," Cole said.

"Twelve hours." Kai came to the table. "Sit down."

They sat.

"The western zone data," Kai said. "Full records — composition analysis, depletion timelines, fragment processing notes, extraction rate and method for both the depleted zones and the stable ones. Delivered to the Director’s measurement office before observer status begins at any formation zone site."

"Accepted."

"No GeneCorp instruments at zone sites without specific prior approval. Each instrument, each visit. The Fragment Extractor in any form is not a survey instrument under this agreement."

Cole nodded once. "Agreed."

"Three days’ advance notice to me or Scholar Soren for any observer presence at a zone site. Active zone sites are active construction. Unannounced observers are not compatible with that."

"Reasonable." Cole was quiet for a moment. "You anticipated my framework correctly. Those are the same conditions I would have set if I had drafted the terms."

"I know."

Soren turned a page in his notebook.

"The western data transfer," Kai said. "How long?"

"Six days by relay. I can authorize it from the boundary camp this afternoon."

"Then do that." Kai stood. "I have six anchors left."

Cole stood. He looked at the zone boundary — the standing grass, the density difference visible from forty meters. He looked for a moment without speaking.

"Zone Five will conduct today?" he said.

"This evening. Maybe before."

He looked at the boundary once more, then picked up his coat from the table edge.

"I will authorize the transfer before I leave," he said. He walked back toward the boundary camp.

Soren did not look up. "That was efficient."

"He had already worked out what was acceptable," Kai said.

"Yes." Soren reopened the notebook. "He is not a careless man."

The final six anchors seated before the third hour of afternoon.

Zone Five was concentrated in a way Zone Four had not been — twenty-two meters at depth, the entity waiting directly at the anchor front rather than spread across a coverage plane. Each anchor point returned clean. The carrier function met the stone at exactly the character the entity had shaped it into over weeks of monitoring Zone Four’s conduit signals through the network and drawing itself together in preparation.

Kai set the final anchor and held contact until the connection was certain.

The entity conducted.

Zone Four had moved outward — a slow horizontal wave through the mudflat stone. Zone Five moved straight up. A vertical column of gene energy rising from the concentrated zone, traveling through twenty-two meters of organized stone, breaking into the air above the zone center.

The grass directly above the zone center did not move in the wind.

It stood still in it.

Mira made a quiet sound at the zone boundary and said nothing else.

Kai surfaced. Pool at forty-two percent. He sat in the grass and waited.

He noted the mission and the Zone Six information. Twelve meters. He had not worked at twelve meters since the early western chains. Everything since the archive gorge had been deeper. A zone that close to the surface would read differently.

He was partway through the first notification when the second arrived.

Kai read through the Gene Primordial requirements twice.

Archive Fragment #4. Zone 6 chain. Two thousand evolution points.

He had one thousand and thirty. He needed nine hundred and seventy more — plus what Level 9 would cost. He looked at the zone survey table in his father’s book. Zone 6 not yet chained. Five more medium zones and seven long-range zones still ahead.

A long road. Not an impossible one.

He noted the requirements and closed the book.

He ate twice at dinner without remarking on it.

That evening, Soren showed him the Zone Five conducting data.

The vertical column architecture had produced a gene energy spike above Zone Five’s center that was three times the Zone Four perimeter measurement. Not at the zone edge — at the center, direct.

"Zone Four distributed outward," Soren said. He had both readings side by side. "Zone Five concentrated upward. The center effect is higher; the perimeter will spread slowly over weeks rather than days." He looked at the numbers. "Different archive node below this zone. Different gene type reaching the surface."

"Different delivery mechanism," Kai said.

"Yes. Yara’s root data will show a central spike — deep effect at the zone center, lateral spread lagging behind." He turned to a new page in his notebook. "I am building a separate column for the biological contact array. Zone Five’s architecture does not fit Zone Four’s measurement template."

Mira was reading by the fire. The darker vault pair shell was in her left hand, steady at its low glow from the conducting event.

"Zone Five acknowledged Zone Three when it conducted," she said. "Zone Three acknowledged back."

"What did Zone Three say?" Kai asked.

"I couldn’t hold both signals at once. Zone Three’s response was brief." She turned the shell over once. "The quality of it was recognition. Not surprise. Zone Three already knew Zone Five was there. Has known for a while."

Kai looked at the fire.

Two chained zones talking to each other through the network. He filed this under: things worth documenting separately from the zone work itself.

He wrote in his father’s survey book: Day Twenty-Four. Zone Five complete. 26 anchors, 21 working days including re-survey. Gene Ancient Level 8. Gene Primordial requirements confirmed: Fragment #4, six zones minimum, 2,000 EP. Zone Five acknowledged Zone Three through the network. Zone Three responded. The chained zones know each other now.

He closed the book. Pool overnight recovery landed at ninety-two percent when he checked before sleep. Lower than the recovery ceiling he had been carrying since Level 7.

He noted the number.

It went in the book without comment.
