Chapter 461: Chapter 461: Holding Back!
The crowd reacted immediately, also caught off guard by the sudden move by Leo.
"Ohhhhh, that’s wonderful by Calderon. Magnificent play by the teenager," the commentary said, but Leo was now driving forward.
Leo, keeping the ball in tow with his run, lifted his head.
When he did, the scene slowly blurred into something much more coherent as the seconds passed.
Jake had already begun peeling away from Van de Ven, drifting into the channel between the Dutchman and Cristian Romero.
Carlo, on the other hand, was racing down the left touchline, dragging Pedro Porro with him, while Reyes occupied the space just behind Jake, ready for any loose ball.
This was what he had ahead of him, and Leo was too eager to not take advantage of that situation.
Before Bissouma, or any Tottenham player could catch up for that matter, his right foot came through the underside of the ball with drive and pace.
The pass travelled forty yards through the evening air, curling away from Tottenham’s midfield before dropping perfectly into Jake’s path.
"That’s a magnificent ball!" the commentator exclaimed on the broadcast as Jake, despite the pressure from his side, cushioned it brilliantly with his chest.
The ball barely bounced away from him, right as Van De Ven stuck his arm out to keep Jake distraught, but the 20-year-old had other ideas.
Before the ball could even reach the turf, he swung through it first time, sending the strike right towards the top corner as the commentary fawned over it on the broadcast.
"IT’S JAKKEEEE!"
No matter how you looked at it, the ball looked like a goal, but somehow, Vicario sprang across his goal, stretching every inch of his frame.
His fingertips were just enough as the ball kissed his glove before sailing over the crossbar.
The entire stadium, which was on the way to their feet, rose anyway as hands went to heads, some in relief but most in frustration.
"What a save!" the co-commentator called frantically on the broadcast.
"And what an impact from Leo Calderon. He’s been on the pitch barely a minute, and he’s already split Tottenham open with one pass."
"We’ve seen this connection before," the lead commentator replied.
"Jake knows exactly when to run, and Leo has the vision to find him. Wigan suddenly look alive again."
Jake clapped his hands once before pointing back toward Leo.
The midfielder, on the other hand, simply raised a thumb in response and nothing more.
There was still work to do.
As players jogged toward the penalty area, Carlo made his way over to take the corner.
Leo took a couple of steps forward before stopping himself.
He glanced behind him and saw that only a single midfielder remained between Tottenham and Ben Amos.
Seeing this, he immediately shook his head.
"You take it," he signalled right as Carlo looked over.
Leo pointed toward the corner flag before tapping his own chest and then gesturing back toward the halfway line.
"I’ll stay."
Carlo understood immediately.
If Tottenham cleared the ball, somebody had to stop the counter before it began.
The winger nodded and continued toward the quadrant.
"So a corner for Wigan," the commentator noted.
"A chance to reduce their arrears and level the game, or a chance for Tottenham to strike again. Wigan are down to ten men, and they can’t afford to leave themselves completely exposed."
With things all calm in the penalty box, Carlo raised his arm to convey his readiness to his mates before his delivery came in with pace a moment later, curling viciously toward the penalty spot.
Jack Whatmough, who had joined the forwards after the previous attack, got to the ball under no obstruction and met it cleanly.
The ball should have been at the back of the net, but his header only flashed across goal, missing the inside of the goal by mere inches before a collective gasp rolled around the DW Stadium.
"Again, it’s another good opportunity," the commentator sighed.
"And again, Wigan can’t quite find that finishing touch. They’ll feel they’ve had enough chances to be level here."
There was barely time to dwell on it.
The Wigan players looked like they wanted to fuss about the missed chance, but they couldn’t.
They turned around and immediately began sprinting towards their half, and that was because Vicario had grabbed the ball.
They had only gotten closer to the halfway line when the keeper sent it long with a throw, and suddenly, Tottenham were off once more.
This time though, there was no patient build-up nor any sideways passes for that matter.
They went at it, straight through the middle.
"Here come Spurs again!" the commentary called on the broadcast as Bissouma carried it forward before slipping it into Maddison.
While this happened, Richarlison darted between the centre-backs, asking for the pass and right when Maddison turned with the ball, he saw him.
Without hesitating, he threaded it through, but then out of nowhere, a blue and white shirt appeared.
It was Leo.
Seeing him, James Maddison fretted at the last, but the ball had already left his foot.
He could only watch as Leo stretched out a boot and cut the pass out cleanly.
The interception killed Tottenham’s attack before it could even begin.
Without taking an extra touch, Leo spun and released the ball into space down the left, not waiting for the Tottenham players around him to collapse, and once more, Carlo was already sprinting.
Pedro Porro immediately turned to chase as once again, Leo instinctively leaned forward, ready to join the attack, only to then stop himself at the last as he remembered where he was needed.
He held his position instead, and once again, seconds later, that decision proved to be the right one.
"Wigan on another attack at the moment. Is there saving in this for them!" the commentary called as the ball lingered at the left where Carlo bided his time.
When Porro didn’t lunge in, Carlo went all in, running his legs above the ball before pushing past the Spaniard who tried to lunge in finally but by then, he had been already done in!
