Chapter 459: Chapter 459: Crushing Tackle! [GT - !]
With the home side’s incessant barraging, Tottenham, who had faced some adversity in the first half, were now being made to look like they were the ones losing.
The home crowd sensed it, and with it the belief returned.
Then, in the 63rd minute, the opening finally arrived.
It started with Jake.
A delivery was swung into the box, and the striker rose above everyone.
He could have gone for goal himself, but Vicario had almost stopped all they’d thrown at him that day.
Instead, he brought the ball down into the path of Reyes and the Portuguese player reacted instantly.
With one touch, he took it on his chest and then with another, he looked up and moved it wide where Carlo was waiting on the left.
As he took the ball in stride, the stadium got behind him.
"Wigan are coming again!" the commentator shouted as Carlo took the ball forward, hugging the touchline right as Pedro Porro stepped across.
The Tottenham defender expected him to slow the attack down and look for support, but Carlo had other ideas.
A sharp touch took him forward, but that wasn’t the end.
In the next second, another pushed the ball past Porro as the winger exploded into space, causing the voice of the crowd to rise a notch.
"Go on!" they roared as Carlo drove toward the edge of the box before sending a low ball across the area.
It was dangerous, but not perfect and seeing this, Van de Ven reacted first.
The defender stretched out a leg and managed to get there.
The chance looked squandered, but then suddenly, the clearance struck Reyes.
The ball changed direction instantly, returning from where it came from, and there was no time for anyone to react.
It spun away from Van de Ven, away from Vicario and then into the back of the net.
And instantly, the home side were on it.
"GOAL!" the commentary came in.
"WIGAN HAVE PULLED ONE BACK, AND THEY ARE NOT OUT OF THIS JUST YET!"
The commentator almost laughed at the chaos of it.
"It will not be remembered as the cleanest goal Wigan have ever scored, but they will not care about that whatsoever!"
Reyes, the moment he saw the ball go into the net, followed it.
He grabbed the ball, amid slight opposition from Vicario, before turning towards the kick-off spot, which told you all that you need to know.
Because as flashy and performative as Reyes was, if he wasn’t celebrating, it told you that things had gotten grave.
He ran straight back toward the halfway line, and as he did, the scoreboard hanging above the stands in the stadium changed.
Wigan 1-2 Tottenham.
They had gotten what they needed, and another comeback looked on.
On the touchline, Dawson applauded, a manager acknowledging that his players had done what hadn’t been asked of them and proven him wrong.
A moment later, his eyes moved toward Leo, who immediately knew what was coming.
Before Leo could rise, Dawson pointed toward the warm-up area.
"Get ready."
Leo nodded, grabbed a bib and then stepped toward the sideline.
And while he did so, the reaction from the supporters was instant.
"Leo!"
"Leo!"
"LEO!"
Within seconds, the entire stadium was involved.
"CALDERON! CALDERON! CALDERON!"
And the gantry couldn’t help but get involved.
"It seems that Dawson is calling on the one-man cavalry."
Leo continued jogging along the touchline, stretching his legs and preparing to enter.
And somehow, his presence alone had changed the feeling around the stadium.
The goal had given them hope, but Leo was going to serve as the instrument in delivering such hope.
Because everyone inside the ground knew what he was capable of, and they knew he could change a game in a single moment
.
But before Dawson could bring him on, Tottenham almost delivered a crushing blow.
The away side broke forward, quickly, and Wigan were caught too high.
The defensive line was exposed, and without hesitation, the pass came through the middle.
The goal was there, and it looked inevitable, until Tiehi appeared.
The midfielder sprinted back with the desperation of being the last man, and without hesitation, he threw himself into the challenge.
The ball was taken away, and the danger disappeared.
But everyone immediately looked toward the referee as the whistle sounded.
Tiehi slowly pushed himself back onto his feet, and as he did, he came to face the referee who was already walking toward him.
The midfielder barely reacted as he already knew what was coming.
The challenge had stopped a certain goal, and so without waiting for the referee, he turned and began walking down the pitch.
The referee, nonetheless, reached into his pocket and pulled out a red card.
Wigan were down to ten men.
The noise disappeared and the home supporters who had been singing their players on moments earlier went silent.
Even Leo stopped his warm-up because now, everything had changed again.
Back on the pitch, the Tottenham players were already moving, preparing for the free kick, while the Wigan players near Tiehi patted him as he walked down.
The midfielder looked disappointed, but not defeated.
He had made the decision every defender or midfielder in that situation had to make.
Stop the attack, take the punishment and give the team another chance.
Before he could enter the tunnel, the applause started almost immediately.
The home supporters understood.
They knew the red card had changed the game, but they also knew why it happened.
Tiehi had kept them alive, and as the latter got to the sidelines, Dawson stepped forward to meet him.
The manager did not shout or complain.
Instead, he placed a hand on Tiehi’s back as the midfielder walked off.
"You did well."
Tiehi looked toward the pitch.
"I had to," he said as Dawson gave him another tap.
"Go on."
Tiehi nodded before disappearing down the tunnel.
