Chapter 5564: Chapter 5564: Provenance! III
He asked it inwardly first, of the collar, of the stone, of the trial itself, and got nothing, and so he asked the only thing here that answered questions.
"The lifeforms," he ground out. "The ones with Provenance Essence. What were they? How did they live? What did they do with it?"
I do not know.
"You knew enough to theorize the collar requires it."
|I knew enough to fail twice. Those are different quantities of knowledge.| The Voice was quiet a moment.
What I hold is this. They generated. Where everything else in existence gathers, they produced. I have said this already and I say it again because it is the whole of my inheritance on the subject. Everything else is rumor shaped like information.
"Then give me the rumor."
They were few and they were many. They were early. They did not build Pantheons, as far as any account claims, and they did not climb Scales, and they held no Causes that anyone ever recorded, which I have always found either impossible or terrifying, and I have never determined which.
Noah’s back was beginning to fissure!
He could feel it, not the bones now but the existence itself, hairline fractures spreading through the architecture of what he was, the way the small turning realm in Damodred’s lesson had cracked. Fourth increment. His arms had gone from shaking to a deep steady burn that was worse!
"How," he managed, "does a thing get stronger without gathering? Walk me through it. You’re a Primeval who has died here. What would you have had to do differently?"
Accumulate better.
"That...makes no fucking sense."
Refine what was accumulated until it became indistinguishable from self.
"That is still external things merely refined!"
|Then I do not know, and that is precisely the point, and you have just found the edge of me.| Something bitter moved through the ancient voice.
Do you understand what you are asking? You are asking a being made entirely of successful accumulation to describe its opposite. Every instrument I have for thinking about power is an instrument for thinking about acquisition. When I stood where you are kneeling, I tried to bear the weight with everything I had gathered across my whole existence, all of it, ages of it, and the weight went through all of it like it was not there, because it was not looking at what I had. It was looking at what I was underneath what I had, and underneath what I had, there was nothing that I had made.
"...!"
I am the wrong lens. I failed here because everything I know is the wrong lens.
Look at yourself.
The fifth increment came down, and Noah’s right knee joined his left in the sand, and the blood was coming from his ears now as well as his nose, and a long crack opened somewhere in the region of his existence where the Foundations lived, and through all of it his mind kept working, because the mind was the one thing in him the stone had not yet reached!
Look at himself.
Fine. What was he?
He was human. He kept arriving at that and it kept feeling insufficient, because human was not ancient, human was not special, human was a small warm mortal category that he had crowned precisely because nobody else thought it was worth crowning.
He was not one of those early lifeforms. He was not born generating anything. He had been born in a house, and everything he had ever become, he had gotten from somewhere!
That was the sentence.
He knelt under a sky with his existence cracking, and the sentence turned over once more and showed him its other face, and Noah went very still beneath the stone.
Everything he had ever become, he had gotten from somewhere.
"..."
Infinity. He had not invented Infinity. It was a route that existed before him, a variety of lifeform, a framework other beings had walked for ages, and he had taken it into himself and made it enormous and it was still, at its root, an idea he had found lying in existence and picked up.
The Primordial Source. Found. Grasped. Not made!
Intent. The orders of Intent were a ladder someone else had described, Egoic and Ananke and Autarkis, and he had climbed two rungs of a ladder that was standing there before he arrived!
His Pantheon. THE Infiniverse was alive and his and beloved, and the concept of a Pantheon was as old as the Scales and older, inherited from every being who had ever raised one.
The nine First Causes of Hvitrmarr. Hers. Married into him, colliding in him at this very moment, and not his, never his, First Causes of a lineage seated by living hands that were not his hands!
Even his Osmontian Causes, carved from his own identity, were carved in the shape of a thing called a Cause, and Causes were external, Causes were the beams of a house somebody else had built or grown or claimed, and he had made his own beams but he had made them as beams, to fit a house he had not designed!
His whole existence, every layer of it, was magnificent borrowed architecture!
Oh!
And the weight was not looking at what he had.
The sixth increment came down and his existence screamed along every fissure at once, and Noah, kneeling in his own blood in the black sand, holding the underside of a world, began, impossibly, to smile.
Because he could see it now, and it was enormous, and it was insane, and it was the only door in the room.
The trial was not asking him to hold more. Every candidate in every age had tried to hold more, had brought the whole of what they had gathered and stacked it under the stone, and the stone had gone through it like it was not there. Accumulation could not answer this, no matter how grand, because accumulation was the wrong category of thing. The spark was generation, and generation could not happen in a space that was already full.
Full of everything he had taken in.
To generate something completely his, something with no upstream, no origin, no elsewhere, he would have to make room for it, and there was no room, because Noah Osmont was packed to the walls with the treasures of existence, every one of them earned, every one of them loved, every one of them from somewhere else.
So the answer, the whole answer, the answer that no accumulating being in any age could have permitted itself to see, was this.
Cast it out.
All of it.
Anything he had not pioneered himself. Anything that had existed as an idea before he arrived at it.
Shatter Infinity out of his existence. Carve out the Primordial Source. Break the Pantheon-concept, the Intent-ladder, the borrowed shape of Causes, the nine First Causes that were a Steeds and not his, every framework, every route, every inherited beam in the whole borrowed house, cast every last piece of it out of himself until what knelt in this sand was only what Noah Osmont had generated and nothing else at all.
And then see what was left.
And see if it sparked.
His maddened smile widened beneath the blood, and above him the stone came down for the seventh time!
...!
